  1. Gran Turismo (Greatest Hits) (PS)

Gran Turismo is the new definition of a great racing game. With wonderful graphics, TV-like replays, and an entire host more » of cars to chose from, this instant classic goes beyond a driving game into the realm of driving simulator. You can choose between the arcade version (featuring classic cars such as Corvettes and Aston Martins) or the simulation, which is the true heart of the game. The simulation starts you on an entire racing career beginning with a cheap used car and second-rate tracks. You will find yourself longing for the Dodge Viper as your sad $10,000 starting fund puts you behind the wheel of a used Honda Prelude or Mazda RX-7. As you win races, acquire money, and earn advanced licenses, you are able to buy better cars and race in more competitive matches right up to the GT World Cup. Complete with cunning renditions of actual car models and a very playable interface, this game is great for the serious racing simulation fan and the casual gamer. It promises instant action and the kind of gradual advancement that keeps gamers playing for weeks. While the license tests can be hard, the fun track design and sheer number (140-plus) and variety of cars to choose from makes this an exciting race experience. --Allen Stewart Pros: Great graphics More than 140 accurately modeled cars Awesome replays--actually looks like a TV race Cons: Steep learning curve « less

  2. Metal Gear Solid: Greatest Hits (PS)

You are Solid Snake, a superspy who's half James Bond, half Snake Plissken, and you are mean. Your mission isn't terribl more »y new (infiltrate a terrorist base and blow everything up), but the gameplay is: your numerous enemies are watching for you, and you are encouraged to sneak rather than simply charge in. Every level brings new challenges. You fight snipers, invisible ninjas, psychic warriors, and even an M-1 tank! As the father of the modern spy game genre, this game is an instant classic. Your allies and superiors speak to you via a cool, implanted radio, monitoring your progress, offering tips--but failing to give you the full story. The combination of a mysterious and engaging plot and high in-game tension makes this a thrilling ride. Campy humor also abounds as you rescue beautiful women, verbally spar with your allies, and blow up enemies in the bathroom. A user-friendly control interface allows for sniping, hiding, crawling, and running, and the graphics leave nothing to be desired. If you like espionage, spy movies, or just want to own and play a piece of gaming history, then this is a must have. Metal Gear Solid is one of the all-time greats. Game tip: Secretly attach plastic explosives behind an enemy, sneak out of the room, and see what happens. --Allen Stewart Pros: Story well-integrated into gameplay Stealth favored over brute force Challenging puzzles Cons: Puzzles can be frustrating Torture scene too intense for younger gamers « less

  5. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (PS)

Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver tells the story of Raziel, one of the undead lieutenants of the vampire lord Kain. Jealous o more »f Raziel's newly evolved wings, Kain tears them apart and casts his former champion into the netherworld. But a powerful entity that dwells in the netherworld has restored Raziel to a semblance of life and has set him on a path of vengeance. After this tantalizing movie introduction, you take control of Raziel in the spectral realm, where your new existence is explained to you. From there you enter the physical plane, ready to begin your quest for power and revenge. Raziel's combat moves are extremely brutal, as you'd expect from a vampire who has returned from the dead. When he finds a spear, Raziel gleefully stabs and slashes before he impales his foe, lifts it off the ground, and feasts on its soul. Doing so enhances Raziel's power, and devouring the souls of the rest of Kain's lieutenants is the only way to get the special abilities--scaling walls, phasing through gates, etc.--needed to reach Kain himself. While fun for adults, parents should take note: this game is definitely not suitable for kids. --John Cocking Pros: Agile, fluid character animation and combat moves Beautiful scenery The Soul Reaver (think "vampiric lightsaber") Ability to glide using the tattered remnants of Raziel's wings Cons: Convoluted topography Sometimes awkward camera angles Lack of direction « less

  6. Resident Evil: Survivor (PS)

A first-person-shooter based on the Resident Evil series of "survival horror" video games, Resident Evil: Survivor is a more »n unfortunate casualty of political correctness. It's painfully obvious that this game was meant to be played with a light gun, which the Japanese version supports, but the U.S. version decidedly does not. Instead, a rudimentary control scheme using the PlayStation controller has been substituted, one which is simply ill-suited for the otherwise unmodified arcade-style gameplay. Were it not for this major shortcoming, Resident Evil: Survivor's other flaws would be more tolerable, if not excusable. The attempt here to graft various elements of the Resident Evil games onto a shoot-'em-up just doesn't take. The plot--which casts the player as an amnesiac who survives a helicopter crash only to find himself in a foreboding town swarming with zombies and other hideous biotechnological mutations--is more of a side story to the Resident Evil saga, and not a very interesting one at that. The game's puzzles practically solve themselves, and while your character is free (more or less) to go where he pleases, the gameplay is so terribly linear that it might as well take place on a predetermined track. Once you factor in the game's coarse graphics, choppy animation, and spotty sound, what you're left with here is far more horrible than horrifying. --Joe Hon Pros: Provides some side-story elements to the Resident Evil saga Cons: No light gun support; substituted controls ill-suited for arcade-style gameplay Coarse graphics, choppy animation, and spotty sound Short game length with practically no replay value « less

But this is only the beginning of a much larger adventure, as Stahn will travel the world searching for other heroes that are tied to him by fate. He will also have to battle a relentless flow of enemies in a real-time battle system. Graphically, dungeons and battle are rendered with hand-drawn 2D animation, while the world is rendered in 3D. You must help Stahn discover his true nature in TALES OF DESTINY. « less

  8. Persona (PS)

By talking things out, you can earn components of spells the more components you have, the more powerful your spells become. 10. Diablo (PS)

"Monty Haul." "Hack and Slash." If these names mean anything to you, you'll like Diablo. The story is simple and doesn' more »t get in the way of the action: the demon Diablo has set up shop beneath the cathedral on the edge of town, and it's your job to destroy him. Diablo was and is one of the great PC role-playing games, and this PlayStation port holds true to the original. You create your character--Warrior, Sorcerer, or Rogue--and take him or her up in experience levels as you hack your way down, level by level, to the bottom of the dungeon beneath the cathedral, where Diablo awaits. Along the way you gain a lot of cool magical artifacts, weapons, and equipment. These mystical tools define your character as much as or more than the obligatory character stats such as strength, dexterity, and stamina. The game's only flaws are due to its translation to the PlayStation. The controls can be difficult, especially with ranged weapons, and the two-player mode throws both characters on the same screen, often making it problematic to negotiate the various rooms of any given level. Complaints aside, Diablo is a solid hack and slash adventure game. You'd be either a fool or a coward to pass it up. --John Cocking Pros: Great hack and slash action Magical goodies galore Classic dungeon crawl Cons: Awkward controls Frustrating 2-player mode « less
