While it definitely lacks the charm and "completeness" of the japanese versions, it's still an enjoyable game. It's a shame that it never quite picked up in the US considering how much it predates the guitar hero series.
One of the oldest rhythm games ever created. Beatmania exploded in Japan as one of the leading money makers in their arcades, and still pull in about 40% of any Japanese arcade's weekly revenue. Created by Konami's "Bemani" division of games, Beatmania (and Beatmania IIDX) is a game where you spin the disk and push the buttons to make various genres of music, from trance to hip-hop, to hard rock, to gabber and everything in between. This game has gotten a bad rep in America, as a copycat game to Guitar Hero, however since the game came out before 2000, it's pretty safe to say that the people who said this (Adam Sessler) have absolutely no idea what they are reviewing.
This game is really awesome, but the learning curve on it is horrendous. You will lose. Then you will lose again. And again. Then you will seem to get a little better. Then the game will slap you in the face and you'll lose again. This game is for people who are not discouraged by a game over screen, and have the determination of a skilled WoW player. If you enjoy games like Dance Dance Revolution; Stepmania and Guitar Hero, you will absolutely love this game.
