Final Fantasy IX (PS)

Dark times have spread over the world of Gaia. Four separate governing nations, some blinded by their short-sighted gree more »d, some persevering in the name of justice, are battling on and off in a deadly game for power. One kingdom, that of Lindblum, headed by the honorable and trustworthy Regent Cid, finally decides to take a stand against the unspeakable massacres by the troops of Alexandria. Enlisting the aid of mere bandits to kidnap Princess Garnet of the Alexandria Empire, for information and interrogation, Garnet and her bodyguard actually join Cid's cause, knowing full well the outlandish recklessness of the governing Queen, who counterattacks with an onslaught of warriors. Thus begins a crossfire that would engulf the world in something far worse than political standoffs. This game is a literal masterpiece. I picked this game up on release day on a whim really. I didn't know it was being released and being in college, I didn't follow games as much as I do now.

I was very impressed. After two games of angst-ridden main characters and technological worlds, it was a nice to return to a more traditional final fantasy. The characters are lovable and the ability system is very well done. I recently restarted this game and after nearly 10 years, it still holds up…

Like every Final Fantasy after the first one was released, I purchased it the first day it was available. I remember sitting down, placing the controller next to me and watching the opening sequence. The initial game did shock me since I expected more after the graphics jump from FF7->FF8. But they didn't disapoint with this game. Another must have game, one that can be played over and over again for years.

Great story, awesome graphics, outstanding game play, best of all its not going to pop veins on your forehead when you play it.

As much as I liked the previous two games, this is THE best Final Fantasy for the PSX and dare I say, the best Final Fantasy period. « less
