The Witcher is easily the best mature RPG game I have played in a long, long time. The game looks great, uses adult themes without being a cliche, has werewolves and vampires, vampire prostitutes even, and definitely the best voice-overs I have heard in a game, ever.
The game play system is a little odd and cryptic at first, but once you understand the skill tree a little, it really isn't too complicated. The alchemy system is fun to play with, and the combat is in real-time, not unlike Diablo, but not quite that fast. You have three combat styles you can use and change on the fly, and a small assortment of magic too. The combat strategy usually involves simply figuring out what combat style is the most effective, and/or magic. Sometimes it matters what kind of weapon you use, but there aren't a lot of different weapons and armor in this game, possibly my only small complaint.
The game really shines in the narrative department, with an assortment of characters all very nicely voice-acted and a plot arc that is not very predictable, and branches in several places depending on the actions of the player. The most boring character is of course, the player, Geralt, who has amnesia. But it works well because the game is designed to really have the players' choices shape the narrative and the way the game unfolds, as they step into Geralt's shoes, you know, ROLE PLAYING.
There is a censored version, as well as an uncensored one, the difference being the uncensored one occasionally has topless characters displayed in addition to sexually suggestive themes. I don't know why they even bothered. This game has so much blood and violence anyway.
Highly recommended single player RPG campaign, easily a good 40-50 hour run.
An awesome game first time around, but sadly no re playability. Still, it had a pretty good story, the setting was rad, and the ending was pretty crazy. I really enjoyed this game.
Too much story "set in stone". To me, the game felt like an interactive novel. I appreaciate the depth and game design, but I do prefer a more "open" approach to world design. No offense.
