The AI is rather intelligent and well spoken using fully worded dialogue and giving you sound advice. the combat is challenging but very unforgiving.   Risen feels like it was created for the fan that saw what the Gothic series had the potential to be but ultimately failed to deliver. Piranha Bytes learns some lesssons and rolls out the same idea with a better, enjoyable implementation. The combat system is enough to keep you entertained but is more » not overly complicated or particularly enjoyable. The story is fairly linear and has a fair amount of side quests, but it becomes difficult to care about doing more than one particular thing later on, and quest completion often lacks information or is confusing. All in all, worth a play if you ever enjoyed Gothic despite its flaws. « less

  Whether or not you'll enjoy Piranha Bytes' Risen really depends on what kind of gamer you are. Though this is a more humble and user-friendly product than Gothic titles past, it's still very much a hardcore role-playing game. If you're not willing to figure some things out for yourself and the idea more »of freedom of choice doesn't sit well with you, chances are Risen isn't going to mesh well with your gaming sensibilities. If you're a Gothic fan, however, this is an absolute must-buy. If you're familiar with the genre and are looking to take the next step into a mature, well-realized fantasy world, then this is it. Its combat system isn't the greatest and its pacing is inconsistent, but for those who put in the time to see all Risen has to offer, it's an experience that won't be forgotten. « less

  This game is the game to redeem Piranha Bytes. They didn't really do so well with the release of Gothic 3, but Gothic 1 and 2 are definitely my favorite games ever created. This game is basically a Gothic 1 & 2 style game with a better graphics engine and an improved combat system. You can't more »pass up this game if you are an old school RPG fan. « less

  Awesome graphics, excellent exploration, interesting storyline and crappy combat (At least at the beginning, the combat gets way better as you progress), and most importantly VERY addicting.
