A lot of the good changes from previous Bioware RPGs are countered by the bad changes. The main character is much more expressive, and your choices aren't as clear cut. However, most choices don't change much in the long run. There is really only one way this game can end, with you as the victorious hero. For all of its choices, the story is, at its core, incredibly inflexible. I found myself agreeing with a character later on, but the only options I was given went directly against what I wanted to do. The main story itself is relatively short, as well.
However, it is a Bioware game. The story is good, the characters are very likable, save for some, and it's fun start to finish. I prefer KotOR, but this game stands well on its own. I look forward to the sequel.
I absolutely loved the interaction of the characters and the excellent voice acting in this game. Combat, while decent, could use some improvement. I wait in excited anticipation for the ME 2 release next year.
Bioware knows what they're doing when it comes to making games. In Mass Effect you'll find amazing voice acting fully fleshed out characters that you can relate to, and a story that makes you choose at every step, and immediately dumps on you the consequences. A must of fan of the RPG genre. Or for just about any other genre for that matter.
