  League of Legends is a sequel to the very popular Defense of the Ancients mod that was created for Warcraft III. It is not alone in this space, as several competing sequels have emerged around the same time period. League of Legends is a strategic multiplayer-only game that emphasizes quick thinki more »ng and good communication. In the standard game of 5 vs. 5, you and your team are trying to defeat the home base of the opposing team. There are "lanes" through which computer controlled minions are constantly attacking towers (defense structures) that you can help or harass. There are "jungles" (non-lane areas) where neutral creeps can be killed to provide temporary bonuses to your Champion or your team. What makes this type of game different from most RTS games is that you don't control any other units other than your Champion, and there are tons of different Champions to try (at launch, around 40). Each Champion plays very differently and can be equipped with items during the game to differentiate themselves even further. Some examples of Champion abilities: eat minions to grow larger, lay mushroom bomb traps, desecrate the ground, reverse time (and death), construct turrets, summon a giant teddy bear...you get the idea. LoL goes further in separating your Champion (the character you play, which starts at level 1 each game) from your Summoner (your Avatar, which gains permanent levels as you win games). Your Summoner can also bring 2 spells into each game (from a pool of a dozen or so); Summoners also have masteries (essentially passive skills that will help their Champions) and Runebooks (buffs that will apply to your Champion). As you can see, this gets complicated very quickly, and LoL does a terrible job of easing you into the game. This is the biggest negative of LoL: it has a crushingly steep learning curve. The "tutorial" tells you how to move and attack and not much else. It's up to you to discover the thousands of layers to the game that you must understand before you can play properly. Many will likely give up after numerous losses and no wins. If you persevere, however, you will find a very rich experience that can be enjoyed in short bursts of 20 minutes or less as well as marathon gaming sessions lasting half the day. « less

  I heard about this game a few months ago by seeing a online ad. I never really got the collectors edition retail box because i wanted to try it out first. So at the beginning of November i started playing. First, the graphics. I have a AMD Phenom x4 processor, and a ATI Radeon HD 3250 graphics card more »and yet I cant go on the ultra high setting without having quite a bit of lag. I can go on the medium setting no sweat. It has very appealing graphics, and even on the low setting its very good. The gameplay is unique, and builds tons of content on top of the original DOTA. 40 champions, each with unique abilities. Long battles (~40-50 min normal). And intense fast-pace action top off the cake. You get into the game fast, with a nice little tutorial. So overall this game gets a 5/5 in my book. « less

  As a former DotA player, I would have to say that League of Legends really goes above and beyond its predecessor. Considering the game is still in beta there a few glitches and very minor balancing issues still being worked out, this game is very well done. The graphics are simple yet extremely plea more »sing to the eye. There is a wide variety of Champions, each with its own look and feel. There are more serious looking champions like Kassadin then you have Annie who can summon a massive teddy bear. The game is a lot of fun. Just keep in mind to ignore the idiots who call you a n00b when you first start. Everyone has to start somewhere. Considering it is free why wouldn't anyone give it a shot? « less

  As far as RTS games go, this has to be one of the best multiplayer ones around. I just got into beta and plan to explore around and learn the games a bit more before making a judgment call on this one. I'll update my review as I learn more about it and play it a bit more.

  I've played betas of League of legends and Heroes of Newerth. LoL was way better than HoN, i'm sure this game has a great future, light weight client, good graphics for the genre and amazing gameplay! Totally in love with the User Dashboard :D

  I've never played Defense of the Ancients, the predecessor of this game but I'm playing the beta and it's really easy to get into, has gorgeous graphics, and easily has a lot of replay with the already wide variety of Champions.
