  • I love this game.
I got Half-Life back in '99 for my birthday and played that until I finished it... I didn't really like that it was single-player only and when I heard of Half-Life: Counter-Strike (Mod version, not retail) I directly downloaded it and started to check it out. It was mind blowing. I loved it from the very first time I played it.
Now when I play it I usually play different modifications to it using MetaMod and AMX Mod X, I myself have made a modification for it using AMX Mod X, also. A few of the mods for it that I like the most are: War3FT, an excellent mod which provides a few races for you to choose from which each have different skills.
Surf, which isn't a modification itself but it's a different set of maps and there are a few AMX Mod X plugins which enhance the surf experience a lot!

  • Being the original, it's better than CS:S. I use the non-retail (ie: original) non-steam version (yes, there is a non-steam of the final release), as I usually only play LAN or against bots. Either way it's still a good game with heaps of extra content out there (including graphics upgrades).

  • its a really fun game but it can get anaying if your not good at it AKA getting pwnd all the time but if you don't mind geting killed by pros all the time and take your time to get good at it you will find a very good and fun game to play

  • [This game has been superseded by CS:S to me, so this review is from the historical perspective of when CS debuted.]

How do you make a great game even better? Add competitive multiplayer with high production values and replayability. HL deathmatch was fun with friends, but without anything more than the leaderboard to add purpose to the combat, it got boring after a while. Then came Team Fortress Classic, which added team-based multiplayer and a role for any type of gamer, but for me it was still missing something.

TFC was like Go; so many viable strategies that it was daunting. The perfect storm came in CS, which was more like Chess. The smart level design caused specific strategies to develop, and so it was easier to learn them and how to implement them most intelligently. Combine that with the method of upgrading weapons, having that fully-automatic carrot dangling just one headshot out of reach. The more realistic damage model meant a punishing learning curve, but also that the matches were quick. Observing your teammates could sometimes be almost as entertaining as playing the game itself.

Smart design, maybe a bit of luck, and you have possibly the single best online shooter ever.

  • This is the game I started playing FPS on, it's been a great game to play for years and just never really gets old. The amount of user created content never stops getting bigger. The library of maps is so large you couldn't play all of them if you tried. Not to mention the ability to customize virtually every visual aspect of the game with a little effort and the proper websites. I've been playing this game since it's 1.3 build and I still come back to play it today.

  • This is the greatest multiplayer FPS game of all time. I logged more time playing this game than any other. Starting from 2001 and I still occasionally play it today in spurts as do many other people who keep going back to it. I usually write long detailed reviews but I don't think there is much more that needs to be said. It's fucking Counter-Strike.
