Its freaking half life. One of the games one must play (maybe not beat) to call them self a gamer. I have not beaten it, but I got rather far in it, and I can say, its a great game that should be played by most. The graphics have not aged well, but few have, but the game play is still there. Lots of variety of game play; some stealth, some running and shooting, and some puzzle. Its a great game.
Save anytime, anywhere makes for an awful game with zero challenge. The story is actually pretty good by games standards at least. http://agoners.wordpress.com/2009/11/08/saving-anywhere-costs-you-half-a-life/
You cannot fully enjoy Half-Life 2 if you do not play the games in order. This game is such a classic that I enjoy it more than I enjoy playing its second version. I can't stop playing the first, the graphics are amazing for a game in its time, the length is satisfiying, and the plot is extremely well-crafted. I recommend this game for everyone, 11/10.
Really fun game. I bought it after I played Half-Life 2 and even though it is a graphical downgrade I still have a blast. The story unfolds from a first-person perspective and it is one of the few FPSs that has platforming (the jump button is actually used for more than trying to dodge) and some puzzle-solving. It is nice and varied. Very well-executed.
Even though the game is old. It is held with such a high regard that hundreds of people have gotten together to make this:

Black Mesa. The complete remake of Half Life for newer audiences that don't quite like the older graphics.
Half Life has one of the best stories, It is behind the greatest engine, and produces the greatest games and mods. Nothing compares to VALVe and their Steam distribution system.
Other games did pieces of this experience, but Half-life sewed it up into one original, immersive package, and the First-Person Shooter has never been the same since.
Back in the day, when I was playing Doom and Duke I never thouht I might look for story in a FPS. But Half-Life changed that and the story of this Horror-FPS really kept me going and scaredly holding on to my keyboard, always ready to pull the trigger on some crawling or jumping abomination. What a milestone ! Highly Recommended !
The start of a great series. This game was truly groundbreaking and lead to one of the best shooters to grace to PC. Definitely worth a look if you are an FPS fan and don't mind the now outdated graphics.
The first-person shooter that revitalised the genre with innovative settings and narrative.
Half-Life was a revolution at the time because of a well designed setting (Black Mesa Complex), a compelling story of survival and mistery (who´s that suited man with a briefcase ?) and cinematic unexpected events (the Blast Pit monster first appearance is a classic).
The level design has it´s ups and dows (some love "Xen", some hate it, many love "Surface Tension" and many hate "On a Rail") but the game will always keep you immersed in a world gone…
