  • Wasn't the best game ever, but a very entertaining game! I highly recomend this game, but not the "you need to buy" level of ratings.

  • I thought the game was great. The graphics were very good, and the overall game play was great. I loved that there are some ties to the first game. All in all a great game. I love it and I will play this one until it is beat.

  • Be it blowing up a building or taking down a huge oil rig, Mercenaries 2 has many awesome moments. To start the graphics look great, the characters all look good, Matthais and his many tattoos or Chris and the cigar in his mouth all the time. The buildings, bridges, oil rigs all look excellent. The fire and explosions all look great, I liked dropping oil tanks in the middle of forest and just watching the fire spread to other trees.

The audio is good, but you only want the play as Matthais as everything sounds even more bad ass in a Swedish accent. But other than that you'll hear the same 10 one liners all the times, same with the civilians. The sound effects are good too.

The gameplay is a mess though. Some missions you may want to take a stealth approach by sniping a couple guards and then creeping behind building and rock, but the AI wont let you, and you will just give up then and just run and gun your way in. This is fun but gets repetitive .The aiming is also a bit sloppy, I often would over aim or miss because it was often touchy or hard to line up.But aside that this game is fun.

Mercs 2 gets a 3 out of 5 because I cant give half score

  • Graphics come from a Commodore 64 game. Driving vehicles gives you the feeling that you're pushing a shopping trolley through a supermarket...and the trolley has 1 wheel broken. Basically the biggest regret of 2008 for me.

  • I'm currently playing Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, and as much fun as it is, I'm finding myself getting a little annoyed with it. If you've played Mercenaries (the first one), then the game play is just the same, with a few more vehicles and better graphics.

The one thing that I don't like about the game is that there is no covert method what so ever towards infiltrating an enemy stronghold (other than being in an enemy vehicle, but what damage can you do from driving an SUV?). For example, I quietly (at least I thought so) from a distance snipe out the sentries and look outs from their high perches, and as I sneak up to the base using rocks and trees as cover, I start to get shot at; even through the trees at times. Question is, how do they know I'm there if no one saw me? Its all proximity. Come too close to a base, and they shoot at you, even if they don't see you or have their backs to you. So many times have I tried sneaking across a road after an enemy jeep passes by, only to have that jeep do a u-turn and come at me full speed.

If the covert ability was introduced to this game a little better, then it would be much more enjoyable. Instead, you're litterally running into every fight guns-a-blazin'.

The character reactions are computed very well. When approaching enemy camps, the soldiers run for cover, run to sound the alarm, radio in re-inforcements, or run to the closest stationary weapon or vehicle for a strong chance of killing you. This means that if you hijack a helicopter, watch after it when you land to capture the target, or a lone soldier will commandeer it and off it goes.

Hijacking is a little hard as well, bringing some sort of difficulty to the game. Each vehicle you can hijack has a specific button combination that you must follow in order to take over the vehicle from its current driver/pilot. The more powerful the vehicle, the more button combos. This at least keeps you from hijacking everything that you come into contact with with ease; falling from a helicopter after a failed hijacking attempt takes a lot of health away and makes you wonder if you should try it again.

The weapons are cool, some similar to the first game, others new enhancements for this game. I am currently trying to get the "Be Quick or Be Dead" achievement, and I've equiped the high powered rifle for it (able to shoot through light armour and walls). Add with the vast array of vehicles and air strikes that are available to you, the amount of destruction and damage is endless. Especially considering everything... and thats everything... can be destroyed or blown up.

I'm currenlty completed about 58% of the game (so it says) with 65% of the achievements unlocked, yet total I have only 465 out of the 1000. Unfortunately this game has about 300 points allocated for online co-op play. In order to gather these, you'll have to play the entire game again online, with a friend. This is possible, but I haven't tried it yet mostly because I don't know anyone with the game. Besides, its a little annoying to play the game again, as mentioned above.

The map is huge, and you can go anywhere. The good thing is that you ally yourself with other factions, and as you do missions for them, you can open up new landing zones for your helicopter. Thus providing you with the ability to jump from one area of the map to another. This is, however, assuming that you're in good relations with that faction, which is difficult as each faction has some missions against other factions.

Aside from the copter quick jump, you can travel to destinations using any vehicles available. Helicopters would think to be the best choice, however I've only had one helicopter (pirates') which was able to traverse a wide spanse of land in a short period of time. This means that you're spending more time getting to the hot zone then actually blowing it up... This reminds me unfortunately of the game Grand Theft Auto, which should be renamed Grand Theft Taxi.

At times, I've ditched a helicopter for a motorbike just to get there faster. But how can you ditch an apache helicopter armed to the teeth for a bike? Aahh the choices we make...

The game is fun for what it is, but I wouldn't play it again. The fun missions are those that require you to blow up a building or structure. Any method is required, even if its hijacking a copter, winching a fuel tank on top of the building (or beside it) then shoot at it to watch it blow. The sweet missions are blowing up an oil rig. Yes, the whole rig. But those are rare.

The only help I can offer for achievements in this game is through http://www.xbox360achievements.org/game/mercenaries-2-world-in-flames/guide/ Most achievements you'll get just by playing, the others you could get by playing co-op. Reason being is that its a straight forward game... which seems to freeze a lot for some reason. I hope its not my xbox360, then again it hasn't happened for other games. I want to play the game, but I want to play fast. I have other games waiting for me.
